Assessment Without Measures: the importance of clinical reasoning in child language assessment

Buddhima Samaraweera from Sri Lanka will share her PhD research on how SLTs balance academic and personal knowledge, and experience when assessing and making clinical decisions in Majority World Contexts.

In many parts of the world, child language assessment already happens without accurate measures. What sustains clinical practice in these contexts is not the absence of rigour, but the presence of careful, reflective clinical reasoning grounded in context. Making these reasoning processes visible allows us to rethink assessment in ways that are more responsive, equitable, and meaningful for the children and families we serve.
