Who is CTI?
Communication Therapy International is a CEN (Clinical Excellence Network) but you do not need to be affiliated with the UK professional body of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) to join. There is no membership fee.
How do I join CTI?
Contact us to join our email list for regular updates or follow us on social media including Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok. We have a mailing list of members and send out regular updates/links etc. We maintain our website with resources for therapists working overseas, e.g. links to articles and our competency framework. We run webinars at least twice per year and you will be notified about these via our mailing list or social media.
Does CTI provide any job opportunities?
We don’t advertise many jobs and voluntary opportunities, but will put any that we know of out on social media . We do not act as a recruitment agency and we do not evaluate any employment or volunteering opportunities that we may advertise.
How do I keep my registration while working outside the UK?
Please get in touch with RCSLT for queries re: needing to keep UK registration with RCSLT and HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) while working internationally. Please bear in mind that guidelines change from time to time and it is important to check directly with these organisations. If you work internationally for an extended period, you can register with RCSLT as an International Affiliate but you will need your own professional indemnity insurance if working outside the UK for longer than 6 months. If registered as an International Affiliate, you may not need HCPC registration – you can reapply on your return with evidence of your work overseas (to show that you have still been working in SLT). How can I register in another country?
If you are a experienced SLT, thinking of volunteering or working in a Majority World/Low/middle income country (LMIC) or SLT under-served country (but not where you qualified), make sure you have searched for SLT organisations in that country. These may have a social media presence even if they have no website. Check if that country has professional and/or regulatory body requirements.
If there appears to be no SLT professional body or regulatory body organisations in the country, please also contact: other AHP organisations such as for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy for further information and SLT colleagues in neighbouring countries who might know more. They may be able to put you in contact with SLT colleagues working in the country. Also try to contact UK based SLTs who are from that country for further information and support; try RCSLT and social media. If you are from a country other than the UK, please contact your country’s professional body.
How can I complete my NQT competencies while working overseas?
If newly qualified in the UK and wanting to work outside the UK, you would need to access ongoing SLT support so that your RCSLT NQP competencies can be signed off – this needs to be someone who is a member of RCSLT and HCPC registered (if you want to complete the RCSLT NQP Framework).
If you are newly qualified in the UK and moving back to a home country outside the UK after qualifying in the UK, you may not need to complete RCSLT NQP Goals as these are related to UK settings and RCSLT membership. You may find an equivalent of these competencies related to the professional body in your home country.
HCPC registration is only relevant for people working in the UK.
How do I register for telepractice overseas?
If working in telepractice in a LMIC while living in the UK, you may need to register to practise in that country. Please check with the country’s SLT professional association (any equivalent of RCSLT) , any regulatory body ( the equivalent of HCPC) and any other government and/or immigration requirements.
If working in telepractice based in a LMIC but seeing clients in the UK, you will need RCSLT registration (please check with them on most appropriate membership) and you may need progressional body and regulatory body registration in the country in which you are living as well. You would likely pay tax in the country in which you are residing.
